If you fancy avoiding the crowds and the mainstream acts who are scheduled to perform in the plaza adjacent to Taipei City Hall this weekend, but still want to end 2005 on a musical note, then Taipei's The Wall is the place to be.
This is where several of the nation's leading alternative and indie acts take to the stage for a special year-end mini-festival which has been dubbed Tiger Chewing 2005 (啾虎祭).
Organized by TRA and the Independent Music Association (獨立音樂會協會), the three-day festival will see The Wall's mega resources and performance areas stretched to the limit. Along with the performances that will be held in the venue's large basement stage, bands will also perform on two other stages that have been specially erected on the first floor.
Over 20 of Taiwan's leading alt/indie acts are scheduled to appear this weekend and while many of them are well known on the local indie scene the festival also features a dozen up-and-coming acts. These include the Bearbabes (熊寶貝), 12.3, Joker (小丑), White Eyes (白目) and Sunburst Downfall (太陽不見了).
Even so, it should be the long established acts who hog the limelight at the Tiger Chewing year-end bash and these include the foursome Won Fu (旺福), long- serving rockers The Chairman (董事長), offbeat anarchists LTK Commune (濁水溪公社), all girl punk combo BB Bomb (BB彈), the often overlooked rock combo Back Quarter (四分衛), post-rock combo Peppermint (薄荷葉) and innovative scratch/hip-hop act Kou Chou Ching (拷秋勤). The only two overseas acts perfor-ming this weekend are Snoblind from Hong Kong and Tonic from Japan.
Along with the live music, Tiger Chewing also features movies and several local and overseas documentaries will be screened during the festival. The music begins at 7pm this evening and at 4pm tomorrow and Sunday.
The Tiger Chewing 2005 Last Days rock festival will take place from tonight through Sunday at Taipei's The Wall (這牆) which is located at B1, 200, Roosevelt Rd, Sec 4,Taipei (台北市羅斯福路四段200號B1). Three-day passes cost NT$800 and single day tickets cost NT$500. Both are available at the door.
