Children are now facing their worst nightmares

DPA , LOS ANGELE

The economics of film-making are unlikely to allow any easing of this problem. Movies that can attract all-age audiences are by far the biggest earners at the US box office. They are also the biggest sellers of DVD's as new generations of kids drive sales for decades.

Child psychologist David Hoffman believes that modern kids are generally able to deal with what the cinema throws at them.

"We may not like it but they are sophisticated consumers who can make intelligent choices about what they are seeing," he says. "The important thing is not to keep them in a sanitized bubble but to talk to them about troubling scenes and give them the tools to deal with it."
