Typhoon Longwang failed to spoil the fun in Taipei last weekend as Deep Inside returned to Eden, and the latest hot venue on the nightlife scene, Kuta Lounge Bar (Bali Bali), was host to a Selective Sessions breakbeat party that rocked until the very last beat was laid down at dawn.
Organizers ended the night by warning the crowd to take care on the way home as the full force of the storm was lashing the city. The note of caution was wise as the bar's glass entrance door was shattered by the typhoon, leaving shards of glass strewn around the exit.
The idea of an intimate gathering has now ballooned into "The Disco Ball," tomorrow night at Kuta, on 29, Anhe Rd, Sec 1, opposite Eslite (台北市安和路1段29號B2). Entrance is NT$500, which includes a drink "and free beer all night." The catch is you have to look as ridiculous as possible by wearing big hair, flared polyester pants and anything bright from the 1970s. Your jocks "for this evening of debauchery and perversion" provided by the Police Officer of funk, Marcus Aurelius are: Morley (The Sailor), Adora (The Indian) Jayro (The Construction Worker) Pierre (The Biker) and K Fancy (The Cowboy).
At Luxy they're changing things up again by putting on a big hip-hop show that takes over the whole club tonight. Dubbed "Represent" the idea is to put on Taiwan's top DJs and help "break down barriers between different crews." On Saturday two German guys called Pief Schwartz will be playing electro, house, disco and punk stuff. On Sunday, it's "Sweet" (the fourth annual version), with electronica taking over all three rooms, with the country's top 30 DJs, plus Japan's sumurai master of techno Takkyu Ishino and the highly rated Aldrin from Zouk, in Singapore.
At MoS tomorrow the guy to watch will be Yousef, a big-name DJ in the UK. The former Cream resident is guaranteed quality house music (think DJs Sneak, Derrick Carter, Onionz and Laurent Garnier). Yousef is scheduled to appear at 12:30 and will be supported by MoS resident Buff Wise and the Beat Symposium's Pierre.
If you're in Taichung tomorrow check out one of the biggest outdoor dance parties that have been set up in the area. There are two arenas, with electronica from DJs Cevin Fisher, Paul Energy, Andrew Ford, Boyan and others. The hip-hop arena will feature Damian Yu from MoS, Nesh and Angello.There will be a fireworks show, fire dancing, body painting, artist exhibitions and dancers. Everyone's doing it. DJs Da, Funkstar and Elements seem to be in the vanguard of things and are holding a musical soiree at Eden tomorrow night. It's NT$350 before 12 and NT$500 thereafter. They're calling it jungle, which should mean that it will be darker than the trance-inspired stuff we usually get. Finally, on Sunday, at The Source, we have "Sunday Mass," which is NT$500 all-you-can drink, and NT$350 for women. The DJs are Jayro, Scotty Baller, JR and Megan, Elements, Remedy and Adora. So expect breaks, house and drum 'n' bass. Beemer will be emceeing.
