The Vinyl Word

By David Momphard  /  STAFF REPORTER

The clubbing scene got a little bigger over the weekend with the opening of The Face, which has taken over the basement real estate once occupied by Sonic Lemon. Lemon was a dance-past-dawn drug hangout that left a sour taste in your mouth.

The Face is its saccharine-sweet antithesis, with a day-glo dance floor and purple velvet couches. Proprietors of the club are pimping the same top-40 hip-hop heard most everywhere. The drinks list starts with NT$200 Cokes and goes north from there.

Another piece of real estate -- ?albeit a virtual one -- has also undergone a facelift. Djtaiwan.org has spruced things up and added a media upload center for bedroom jocks to have their stuff heard. They've also been co-operating with Expat Radio in Taichung to stream local electronic music.

"Other sites, like Urban People and Taipei Night Life offer a service, but we're more interactive and community-based," said the site's administrator, Ben Goran. Check out www.djtaiwan.org to see what they now have going on.

Tonight there are a couple things on offer, starting with Aston Harvey and MC Sir Real at Luxy. DJ Aston is one half of Freestylers, who have sold half a million records, appeared on Top of the Pops and opened for Lenny Kravitz.

Down the street at JPop Cafe is the Awaken drum 'n' bass party. J-Pop (7F, 98 Zhongshiao E. Rd. 忠孝東路98號七樓) is a lame restaurant that sometimes turns into a pumpkin of a club at the strike of 12. DJs Funkstar, Elements, Steppa and others appear.

Taichung's Disco Revenge headliner, Andrew Ford, takes it further south to Fusion Groove Lounge in Tainan (483 Yunghua, Sec. 2 永華路二段483).

Tomorrow night's promising parties on the radar include The Joint, brought by eclectic impresario Marcus Aurelius. He's closed down a roller rink, nearly toppled a tea house and is now gonna boogie with the boys. The Source (1-2 Roosevelt Rd, Sec 1, Taipei (台北市羅斯福路一段1-2號) is a gay bar, but with all you can drink for NT$350 (NT$500 for guys) there are sure to be at least a few skirts show up. Some might even have women in them.

Coming up are Ice-T and Afrika Islam at MOS, Friday, July 15; Japanese drum 'n' bass giant DJ Aki, at Partyroom, Friday, July 15.

* Darren Emerson, at Luxy, Friday, July 22.

* Summer Aquarian 2005 Beach party at Baishawan, Saturday, July 23.
