Taipei's gonna be bugging out tomorrow tonight when Crooklyn Clan brings its show to the stage at Luxy and offers a peep at what's fresh and what's going down at the nastiest New York parties every weekend.
In a telephone call yesterday from China, where they were performing, DJs Riz and Sizzahandz of Crooklyn Clan said they were on a mission to spread the word about hip hop and introduce the latest sounds.
"Basically we're just gonna do what we wanna do and do what we do in New York four days a week. We're just bringing it to the next level, getting you up to date. We think y'all're ready," Sizzahandz said.
The two-man tag team will, of course, be slamming down their own massive hip-hop party anthems -- like Be Faithful, Wanna Jump and Get Busy -- as well as introducing the Spanish-influenced reggae tone to Taiwan for the first time.
Riz, who first visited China as a kid on a basketball friendship tour of the country, said hip hop now has universal appeal, since it first appeared in the Bronx "and then spread into major cities, onto MTV and videos, traveling around the world over the years.
"I don't wanna say, like, we is copycat or anything but we is just following on from all the other artists who have played such a big role in each generation since the whole thing started, like Grandmaster Flash, Biggie, Tupac and you know the rest."
"In my judgement," Sizzahandz broke in on the speakerphone, "What happened was there was this progression, artists following on the back of each other, sampling the older records. As scary as it is to the true rappers we have to give thanks to the Puff Daddys 'n' all because they popularized the sound and put it everywhere for everyone, from four to 40."
As to the secret of keeping a joint jamming, both DJs were clear about that. "It's whatever keeps the girls on the dancefloor."
