Fifi's put on a ladies' night with a difference this week and instead of thongs and bongs there were sweet sounds and good conversation. Nina, Nancy Cheng and Kay heated up the atmosphere at designer Isabelle Wen's new drinking oasis on Wednesday and it could become a regular thing.
Drink specials included NT$100 beers and NT$150 cocktails, which also helped warm up the proceedings. Nancy's DJing partner from LA, Brian McGuire, was there and like any polite guest had some good things to say about the country and its party scene -- which did look rose-colored after a couple of red wines and a good view from the balcony of Fifi's, overlooking Renai Road.
Eden's Friday night out hosted by Marcus Aurelius was a joyous affair that attracted the model crowd early on and then drifted into a little madness before bumping along toward the end at 4am. Maxxx's set (especially his mix of Miami Vice, combined with Method Man and MC Hammer) kept the vibe going after an awkward turn on the decks by resident Marcus Aurelius.
Fifth Element is scheduled to run for the foreseeable future with a combination of special guests. The Vinyl Word had hoped the evening would be a counterweight to the hip-hop mainstream, with some underground sounds, a little soul and a lot of funk, but dance music DJs will also be appearing. Maybe the mix will work out. Watch this space.
Marcus was on better form the next night and according to organizer Ant (aka Chi Funk) he "ripped up the decks, then got so excited, he started ripping down all the decorations." It was a "massive, massive party" with over 700 attending the mountainside event outside Taichung. "I think everyone got to see what quantity looks like at the parties in Kending, and a lot came back looking exasperated. At Dashan they saw quality and most left looking refreshed."
Still in Taichung, tomorrow at Liquid Lounge (98, Chungming S Rd, (台中市忠明南路98號), DJs Pierre, Declan, D'Jones and Dickweed will be mixing up their own distict house music styles. Deep, funky, tech house is on the table, from 10pm till 5 am. NT$300 will get you in, with a cocktail. A text message says the house rules are "gamblin' and jackin' till 5:30am."
Tomorrow night at Luxy, E.S.P. and Bliss Productions welcome the return of one of the masters of spin, DJ Dan, who will be laying down funky house and "party rocking beats." The Angeleno has been consistently voted one of the top US DJs over the past 10 years and is said to have been one of the originators of the west coast scene. He kicked it up last time he was here and if the spirit is moving him it could be a good one.
At MoS tonight it's Christian B from the UK and Hong Kong's "best breakbeat DJ" Dicky Lau; with Pump up the Volume tomorrow and John Robinson from the UK with superdisco.
