TAS holds seasonal celebration

By Gavin Phipps  /  STAFF WRITER

After heavy rain dampened last weekends Taipei European School Eurofest, teachers, students and members of the Parent Teachers Association of that other foreign school, Taipei American School (TAS) are keeping their fingers crossed that the sun will be out for the school's annual Spring Fair tomorrow.

Organized by the school's PTA, the popular annual event will take place from 10am to 4pm in the school grounds. Since its inception a quarter century ago the event has become an integral part of Tienmou's expat cultural calendar and is now broadcast live on ICRT.

As usual many of Taipei's leading hotels, such as the Howard Plaza and Ambassador, will be on hand and selling a wide variety of foodstuffs, as will representatives from a host of international food and beverage companies, including Pizza Hut and Starbucks. In addition to the professionally prepared food, parents and students will also be out in force and tempting visitors with a fine selection of homemade edible delights.

Along with the extensive and mouthwatering assortment of food, this year's event also features what organizers have dubbed "a shopping mall," which will see 80 well-known local vendors selling wares ranging from household goods to clothing. And, for those looking for a bargain this weekend, the PTA's ever-popular rummage sale stall will once again be offering great deals on just about everything from electrical appliances to toys and furniture.

To keep the youngsters amused TAS students have lined up traditional fairground fun and games including a dog show and the TAS orchestra. Expat community dance groups will provide the day's entertainment.

Proceeds from this year's fair will be donated to a tsunami relief program which sees TAS working in conjunction with the International School Bangkok (ISB), in the hope of re-building a school in the western Thai town of Bang Sak, which was destroyed by the December tsunami.

For the past two months students and teachers at TAS have participated in a host of activities to raise money for the joint TAS/ISB project. It is hoped that this weekend's Spring Fair will enable TAS to come closer to its goal of raising NT$2.4 million for the Bang Sak school.

The Taipei American School Spring Fair will take place tomorrow from between 10am and 4pm at 800, Zhongshan N Rd, Sec 6 Taipei (台北市中山北路六段800).
