The Aboriginal salty pork is a tasty Taitung dish.

G night is an unusual bar in Taitung. It's not on the bar street in Taitung's city center but is located in a more residential area on Lo-yang street. This isolated bar is famous for its wild drinking games and not-too-sophisticated male strip shows. It's also famous for delicious dishes that go well with alcohol.

Lilu Wang (王麗茹) is the hostess of this island of fun and lust in an ordinary neighborhood. She explains that G night means girls night, gentlemen's night and, of course, gay night.

She originally set up her bar as a gay club but found that the gay population is not as big as she expected. So she changed the orientation of the bar -- only slightly.

The food at G night, like the atmosphere, is strong on taste and spice. The most recommended dish is the Aboriginal salty pork. Wang learned this dish from her Aboriginal neighbors and transformed it to make her own taste.

She first prepares streaky pork and then marinates it with Kaoliang liquor (高梁酒), bay leaves, Sichuan pepper and eight kinds of spices. After three days, the pork is ready for the grill, where it's made crispy and then is sliced into shreds. When serving this typical Taitung dish, it is recommended to dip the pork in another sauce based of vinegar and garlic.

The Mexican grilled rib and grilled chicken wings are also popular dishes that combine Taiwan's and Mexico's culinary traditions.

The ribs are first marinated in Taiwanese rice wine and then coated with Wang's sour and spicy sauce mixed with chili powder among other spices. The chicken wings are grilled in a similar way using the same sour and spicy sauce. The two are very filling dishes.

For some vegetables to nibble, try the Korean-style cold radish slices. Again, it's very hot and spicy. Wang uses kimchi sauce and Taiwanese vinegar to make this crisp, cold salad.

Drinking games are always a highlight at G night. Wang will ask her guests to toss away pretense her in southern-style abandon and passion. The games may be silly finger-guessing games, but Wang is very generous to the winners. Winning a game will earn you a six-pack of beer.
