Making waves in the art world

As the head of the National Palace Museum, Lin Mun-lee holds a rare degree of influnce over the direction of Taiwanese art

"Whether or not we have a Guggenheim is not the point. The most important thing to have is a national center that is in touch with the new vision of contemporary arts in Taiwan," she said.

"In general, compared with other Asian cities, the development of art in Taiwan is quite substantial. There is a lot of energy here, but the government needs to match that energy. Otherwise it won't survive on its own," she said.

A platform for exchange between emerging artists must also be present, she said. Her efforts to provide a venue and facilitate an appreciation for the arts among the public is illustrated in her pet project, Taiwan Avant-garde Documenta CO2 in 2002 and the currently running show, CO4.

Lin hopes to make the biannual event more of an ongoing project, similar to the popular Documenta exhibition in Germany.

Lin is comfortable with her decision to resign as chairwoman of the National Culture and Arts Foundation.

"I feel I need to pass on the position to someone else with a new voice and a new mission," she said.

Resigning from the post will also free up time to revive the palace museum and develop CO6.

The changes won't happen overnight and it won't take years either, Lin said. She estimated it will be about half a year before visitors see an exhibition of ancient relics by a contemporary arts curator.
