Discovery Channel to showcase Taiwan

After collaborating in the program Secrets of Taroko (太魯閣秘密) in 2003, Discovery Channel and the Taiwan Tourism Bureau (觀光局) are working together once again to present a three-part series titled Made in Taiwan (台灣采風) to showcase Taiwan.

Homeland (人文風光), the first episode of Made In Taiwan, will premiere today at 7pm. The program aims to tell about Taiwan's rich cultural heritage.

Well-known contemporary artists, such as Lin Hwai-min (林懷民) of Cloud Gate Dance Theater and Liu Ruo-yu (劉若瑀), the founder of U Theatre, speak in the show about why they chose to express themselves through their unique art forms and how Taiwan nurtured their world-acclaimed performance troupes.

"The greatest feature of Taiwanese people is that we are very good at finding our own space, and thus recreating ourselves. We are always able to give more strength to our time," Liu says in the show.

Apart from the two performance artists, Homeland will also feature the younger generation and newcomers to Taiwan.

The show introduces Dashi beach in Ilan County as the new Mecca for surfers, and describes how surfing has become a popular sport among Taiwanese youth in the past several years.

Through the eyes of foreign residents who were attracted to the island because its natural beauty, the show will also introduce Taiwan as a superb place for river-tracing, kayaking and mountain-climbing.

Lastly, the show will introduce rapper Dog G (大支). The Tainan-based rapper will explain why he and his rapper friends choose to rap in Taiwanese and the messages they wish to convey through their lyrics.

The second episode of the Made In Taiwan series, Flavors (美食文化), is scheduled to premiere in December and aims to introduce the amazing variety of food in Taiwan. The last episode of the series, Festivals (熱鬧慶典), will look at Taiwan's unique religious culture and will premiere in early 2005.
