The Digital Shorts Competition of the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival 2004 (TGHFF) is now calling for entries. The winner of the competition will receive a cash prize between NT$150,000 and NT$200,000, as well as chances to present the film at international screening opportunities.

The Digital Shorts Competition is the only competition section in the TGHFF and is the category aiming to preserve the independent spirit of filmmaking.

Set up in 1999, the competition is its fifth year and has since discovered talents among Taiwan's independent filmmakers. Last year, to upgrade the competition level, the event was expanded into an international competition.

Any type of film (fiction, animation, documentary, experimental) produced on digital media, completed after Jan. 1, 2003, and not exceeding 30 minutes is eligible to register for the competition. The entry deadline is Aug. 31. Nominations will be announced on the TGHFF official Web site starting Oct. 5. Selected entries will be showcased during the film festival in mid-November.

The entry form is available on the Web site.

There are four prizes in the competition: Top prize (NT$200,000 cash), Best Taiwan Film, Jury's Special Prize and Audience Prize. The latter three are cash prizes for NT$150,000.

The winner of the top prize in 2003 was The Man Without a Head by French filmmaker Juan Solanas, which is an experimental animation. The Taiwan prize was given to Chiu Hsien-yuan (邱顯源) for his animation Two Sides. Chiu's film was later selected for the Annecy International Animation Festival in France, which took place last month.

Canadian filmmaker Simon Goulet's Oio took last year's Jury's Special Prize and young French filmmakers Xavier Andre and Guillaume Herent won the Audience Prize for their short animation Pfffirate.
