The Vinyl Word got hold of Eddie Spettro just after he landed. He was whisked to Saloon on Xinyi Road and met a whole load of new people then did this interview:
"I'm 25 years old, from San Antonio, in Texas, and I've been DJing for about seven years. DJing is what brought me here but what got my name out round the world is production. For the last three years I've been working in the studio, about 80 hours a week, writing my own tunes, working with different musicians and producers. But all I really want to do is DJ, I love to DJ, and I knew that to DJ more I had to get my name out. And that's why I produced the records. Also, I teach tennis, I've done it for seven years, so that's my day job and a bit of work for Red Bull.
The Vinyl Word: Would you call yourself a bedroom DJ or producer?
Spettro: Not quite. I think I'm a better DJ than a producer, I've been doing it longer.
TVW: What do you add to
production?
Spettro: The dance floor because I'm a DJ first. I started out as a dancer and then went on and I think if you understand the dance floor you know what to do as a DJ. Do you understand the groove? House music is different to pop music. Of course you need a hook, but you have to know there's a tonne of records out there that are tools. They're very simple, or basic, but they have a groove. You can't play peak-hour tracks all night long, there's grooves, and it stems from the funk movement. The funk is simple, it's about the spaces between the hits, it's like less is more.
TVW: We're going to play association. I say something and you respond. OK? Favorite color: green or blue?
Spettro: Blue, definitely.
TVW: Favored acronym: KMT or DPP?
