Killer mountain still haunts New Zealand

"The warning system and bund are an expensive and poor solution that attempts to control the deadly lahar rather than prevent it. They are playing Russian roulette with people's lives in the name of political correctness," he says.

But his successor Chris Carter defends the measures in place and the decision not to put a bulldozer up the mountain to undertake earthworks.

"You can never predict what the outcome of playing on the mountain would be," he said, claiming really comprehensive measures had been taken to provide a long-term solution to the problem.
