The band's most recent album sarcastically titled Happy Songs for Happy People (2003) is a fitting follow-up to Come on and Rock Action with its careful manipulation of noise to generate some of the most powerful harmonies since Loveless by My Bloody Valentine, one of the bands that Braithwaite has cited as inspiring Mogwai's ambition to become the loudest bands on earth. Braithwaite has previously said that his pants flapped from the sonic waves at a My Bloody Valentine show.
Rumors of a Mogwai show have been flying around Taipei for years and Mogwai was scheduled to appear at the Formoz Rock Festival in July but they canceled at the last minute because of SARS.
"That was because we were going to America and the Americans had this list of countries we couldn't go to or they wouldn't let us in," Braithwaite said.
This time the date is nailed down for 6:30pm next Thursday at the newly opened The Wall Live House, located at B1, 200 Roosevelt Blvd, Sec 4, Taipei (台北市羅斯福路4段200號B1).
Advance tickets are available at Tower Records and Impo CD stores, or through Acer Ticketing Network and cost NT$1,350. Acer ticketing adds a NT$100 surcharge. Advance ticket sales stop on Sunday. Tickets will also be available at the door for NT$1,600. As of yesterday, more than half the tickets had already been sold.
Local indie rock band Nipples will open the show.
