Mando-pop stars don't normally take pot shots at their peers, but the China Times Weekly (時報週刊) reported in its Oct. 22 issue that members of the Taiwanese rock band Mayday (五月天) had told reporters in China that the Singaporean singer A-du (阿杜) is as an ugly bumpkin who will never make it big. The band's lead singer A-hsin (阿信) has denied that those words were ever uttered by the band and was quoted by the Apple Daily (蘋果日報) in its Oct. 29 edition as saying he was "so angry at the report that [he] fell asleep," whatever that means.

Mayday was set to release its new album Time Machine (時光機) yesterday on Rock Records, but the release date was extended to Nov. 11 for reasons that were attributed to the mastering process being done in the US. Though it's not out yet and the band has been very hush-hush about its content, the album already has a 5-star rating (the highest possible) on the yesasia.com Web site.

Another highly anticipated release is Love War (將愛) by Faye Wong (王菲), set for Nov. 7. The Beijing-born, Hong Kong-based starlet has had one of the songs on the album cut from all copies destined for China, not that she should care since about 90 percent of the copies sold there will likely be pirate copies of the Hong Kong version. Chinese Ministry of Culture authorities took exception to a lyric in the album's first song that mentions the "sweet smell of opium," always a sensitive topic in China and demanded the track be deleted.

Call it the gooch, the t'aint, the grundel, the sandbar, call it that anatomical wasteland between the legs. Any way you name it, it's simply not the most photogenic part of the body, unless you work for Next Magazine (壹週刊), in which case it's a beautiful scoop. In its current issue, the magazine has a shot of diva A-mei (阿妹) taken at a Warner Records 10-year anniversary concert in Beijing last week wearing a pair of hot pants and in a karate kick pose that reveals a lot more of her than she likely wanted to show off.

Sun Yanzi (孫燕姿), who also appeared at the Warner Records concert despite being on a hiatus, had a similarly embarrassing moment the next day that was made public on the dayoo.com Chinese portal site. In an exclusive report it said the singer was in Shenyang for a concert and before going on stage had made a trip to the toilet for a quick bowel movement. Alas, she forgot that in China it's always wise to carry a roll of toilet paper and found herself calling for help from her stall while the crowd waited. The roadies back stage found some TP and the concert took place with no other hitches.

The Taiwanese Web site ek21.com conducted a poll this week to confirm what is widely regarded as a given: Vivian Hsu (徐若瑄) is the top choice Taiwanese star with whom to actualize a sexual fantasy. Her big, pouty lips and years in Japan where she learned to be extremely "kawaii" were cited as the winning characteristics. Runner up was ABC sex bomb Coco Lee (李玟), followed by teen idols Jolin Tsai (蔡依林) and Elva Hsiao (蕭亞軒). According to the site, 44.2 percent of respondents were girls, while 55.8 percent were men.
