While there are plenty of opportunities to hear classical music in Taiwan, most performances are of the well-worn names of Mozart, Beethoven and the other big names known even to those who have no interest in classical music. In a violoncello and piano concert scheduled for this Tuesday, Tu-chiang (涂強) and Li Mei-wen (李美文) will offer up the world premiere of South Muse II by Taiwanese composer Lee Tzyy-sheng (李子聲), who is currently a teacher in the department of music at the National Sun Yat-sen University.

This music is an attempt to use the discipline of contrapuntal, polyphonic music to express ideas within the tradition of Chinese woodwind and string chamber music. In addition to this new work, the two performers will also provide for less adventurous tastes with a selection from the aforementioned well worn names in this case, the Sonata No. 5 by Beethoven, Sonata op. 40 by Shostakovich, Themes and Variations on Rossini's `Moses in Egypt' by Paganini and Songs and Dances by Tcherepin, an exponent of internationalist music. Indeed, the mixture of performers and pieces ensures a very international flavor to this small concert by two highly talented Taiwanese musicians.

The concert will be given at the Recital Hall of the National Concert Hall, Taipei at 7:30pm on Tuesday. Tickets are NT$300 and NT$500 and are available from Era ticketing or from the venue.
