Music and politics take center stage at Taipei's Huashan Music House (華山音樂館) this evening, when crooner and pioneer of the contemporary Taiwanese language music scene, Chen Ming-chang (陳明章), leads an all-star line-up in a special gig in remembrance of the 228 Incident.

Entitled An Evening in Commemoration of 228 (二二八紀念之夜), the concert will see the popular Huashan regular and Tamsui River Band mouthpiece sharing the stage with three well known, yet quite contrasting players in the local music scene.

Joining Chen will be record producer and founder of the indie label Local Records, now Taiwan Colors Music, Johnson Hsiao (蕭福德). Scoring a surprise hit almost a decade ago with, Huashi Street (華西街) -- a comic tune about life in Taipei's notorious street of vice -- Hsiao is better known nowadays for his prowess behind the mixing desk rather than the microphone. He's also responsible for discovering some of Taiwan's leading acts, including May Day (五月天) and The Chairman (董事長).

Mainstream Aboriginal musician and human rights activist, Kimbo Hu (胡德夫), will be giving an indigenous musical flavor to the evening's events while Taiwan's favorite comedic musical act and one-time MTV emcee, Joy Topper (朱約信), or Pig Head Skin (豬頭皮) as he is affectionately known by his many fans, will be on hand to ensure that there is at least a modicum of humor at the predominately somber affair.

With four quite contrasting musicians on the same stage the evening's program is set to be just as distinctive. The motley crew is to perform a set that will include a selection of their own tunes from genres ranging from folk to rock, as well as liberal doses of nakashi and timeless Taiwanese classics of yesteryear.

Chen Ming-chang, Johnson Hsiao, Hu De-fu and Joy Topper will hitting the Huashan stage at 9pm this evening. The venue is located at 1 Pate Rd., Sec. 1, Taipei (台北市八德路一段一號). Tickets cost NT$300 and include one free drink.
