TT: In working in cultures so different from your own, have you been in situations where you made mistakes or got into trouble because of a misunderstanding?
McCurry: I think if you make a mistake, you are forgiven if people think it's a honest mistake. If you show your respect, then you're probably okay. I've never been in a situation where I was in trouble for some big mistake. ... You just try and apologize. I think it's people's perception of how you are, if you're sincere or not.
TT: That means your attitude?
McCurry: Right, that's exactly right.
TT: Do you have any advice for photographers. What makes a good photojournalist?
McCurry: It requires a lot of work. Maybe more work than most people think. ... And try to look at a lot of different types of photography, look at other people's photographs. It helps a lot. It's like if you want to be a writer, it's probably a good idea to do some reading.
TT: Do you need to go see a different culture to find good subjects?
No. Good subjects are everywhere.
