Never mind Christmas, it's Friday the 13th. To mark the inauspicious date, Sneaky Spins Productions is putting together a night of Evil Breaks at 12 Monkeys, the city's newest nightclub that's taken over the lease from the city's oldest nightclub, Spin.

"We've been waiting for a Friday the 13th to throw an evil party," said Kent Steiner, better known DJ K Fancy, who'll be spinning break-beats and drum 'n' bass. "12 Monkeys' basement is a great place to have it."

In business for a little over a month, 12 Monkeys hopes to replicate Spin's 12-year success. It's essentially the same seedy basement boogie hall it was before, but now has Taipei's inveterate DJ @llen serving as the venue's music director. "They cleaned out all the old furniture, upped the sound system ? and lowered the drinks prices so that people don't leave to drink beer in front of 7-11," Steiner said.

K Fancy will be joined behind the turntables by DJs Em Lee, A-Bomb and Chewie, who are all part of Taipei's AB Koo crew of drum 'n' bass spinmeisters. Em and Fancy will tag-team the turntables before A-Bomb and Chewie go on deck.

"Out of all the different styles out there, [break-beats and drum 'n' bass] definitely is the most evil-sounding, looming music on the dance floor, with all the rumbling bass and pounding drums -- not to mention the weird vocal samples that tend to make it into the tracks," Steiner said, clearly happy not to be playing the dark trance music that dominates the island's nightclubs. "The music is finally getting noticed in Taiwan." Let's hope it catches on. There wouldn't be anything evil with that.

Cover charge for 12 Monkeys is NT$350 and includes a drink. The club is located at B1, 91 Hoping E. Rd., Sec. 1, Taipei (北市和平東路二段91號B1).
