Respected heavy-rock guitarist and inventor of the "double guitar," Michael Angelo and his backing act C4 will be making their Taipei debut Sunday evening, when they play a special one-off gig in the Central Daily News's auditorium (中央日報華夏廳) to promote the release of their latest album, Call to Arms.
Making his studio debut in 1995 with No Boundaries and following it up two years later with Planet Gemini, Angelo's recording career has been sporadic to say the least. But while his name might not be on the tip of everybody's tongue, the guitar virtuoso and his unique sound have probably been beamed into more households than many of his better-known peers.
As a session musician Angelo has been responsible for putting music to TV commercials for Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, KFC, United Airlines and McDonalds, as well as performing and composing the theme tune for the Chicago Wolves hockey team.
Previously known by the monicker, Nitro, Angelo's latest backing band, C4, was formed by accident on the stage of Milwaukee's Summerfest last July and has since become the guitarist's pet project. Featuring John Mrozek on drums, Dan Leneger on vocals, Dan Buckley on bass and Angelo on his "double guitar," the four-piece rock combo are of the classic metal mode.
Packing their tunes with scorching vintage metal riffs and riotous gang choruses, the band combines the clout and clenched fist ear-splitting hullabaloo of Angry Anderson and his Rose Tattoo with the dexterity and the six-string smarts of guitar guru, Yngwie Malmsteen.
While Angelo and C4 will no doubt continue to be a fixture, albeit on the outer-rim of the heavy rock touring scene rather than as a platinum selling act, Angelo's skill and popularity as an instructor is in no question and looks set to continue for quite some time.
His best selling Star-Licks instructional guitar video, which has sold up-wards of 100,000 copies worldwide since its release two years ago, continues to outsell many of the series' other videos. This is quite some feat, considering the series also features videos by Queen's Brian May, Dave Navarro of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane's Addiction as well as the Motor City Madman himself, Ted Nugent -- none of whom have come close to out-selling Angelo's instructional video.
Michael Angelo and C4 will be performing at 7pm Sunday night in the 3rd floor auditorium of the Central Daily News (中央日報3F華夏廳) which is located at 260, Pate Rd., Sec.2, Taipei (台北市八德路二段260號3F). Tickets cost between NT$900 to NT$1,500 and are available through ERA ticketing outlets or at the door.
