NDT III will be performing three of Kylian's works at the National Theater this weekend: A Way Alone, When Time Takes Time and Birth-Day.
Since all three works are reflections on the themes of time and death, perhaps it was natural for one reporter at Tuesday's press conference to ask if because NDT III's dancers were all older, their repertoire focused on these issues and if their core age of their audiences was "senior" as well.
All five were quick to disabuse the notion that as senior dancers they were preoccupied with mortality or were only of interest to people their own age. "The theme of the program is a coincidence. There are many pieces in the repertoire that have nothing to do with birth or death," said Krugel.
The company attracts a wide variety of audiences, Krugel said, adding "We're very inspiring to younger dancers -- proof to them that a dance career does not have to stop at 40. By the time you reach 40 you are just ready to be a performer."
When asked how long they see themselves dancing, the company members said it was a very individual decision. "As Jiri Kylian says,`As long as you have something to say on stage, you belong on it'" Kupferberg said. Fallengen said that he had stopped dancing four years ago and then became a guest member of the troupe a year ago. "Now that I am dancing again I feel alive again," he said.
