British drum-and-bass sensation Goldie comes to Taipei tomorrow for a one-off gig.
Perhaps most recognizable as Angel, the debt collector on the popular UK television show, Eastenders, Goldie actually started his career in media as a graffiti artist, quickly becoming one of England's most prominent graffers and one of the subjects of Africa Bambatta's film Bombing. But it would be his love of music and admiration of popular Rage at Heaven DJs Grooveride, Fabio and Doc Scott that urged him toward the turntables and making records.
A quick study, Goldie's first releases were soon being spun by his idols at London's hottest nightclubs and he would himself find a place among the UK's top DJs. His 1997 recording Timeless became the first drum-and-bass record in the British album charts, shooting straight to No. 7.
He's since been touring the world's club scene and even landing meaty roles in feature films like Snatch and The World is not Enough.
"Everyone's sorted," Goldie has said of his success, "from Dillinja to Grooverider to Adam F to Doc Scott. Now we're meeting in airports!"
Catch him coming from CKS airport tomorrow night at Y17, where a roster of events are scheduled to begin at 2pm, including skateboarding and climbing on the facility's massive indoor climbing wall. The music begins at 7pm with DJs Chozie, J4, Mykal, Orange and Ty, with Goldie batting cleanup.
Tickets cost NT$400 and are available at Tower Records, M&M Boutique and at the venue. Y17 is located at 17 Renai Rd., Sec. 2, Taipei (北市仁愛路二段17號).
