Organizers of the annual Golden Horse Film Festival have announced the line-up of films for this year's event. With a list of some 100 films from more than 30 countries, this year's festival promises to be a star-studded affair. The festival will take place from Oct. 31 to Nov. 14 at the UCG Lion Theater in Taipei's Hsimenting.
First, in the Master Class section, the must-see is Francis Ford Coppola's 2001 version of Apocalypse Now Redux. This director's cut is a three hour and 23 minute-long film, with an additional scene with Marlon Brando, and footage of the navy patrol boat near the beginning of its journey up river. Film fans won't want to miss the chance to see this award-winning classic from 1979 on the big screen.
Also showing in the Master Class section will be German filmmaker Werner Herzog's recent work, Invincible, a drama about Jewish identity starring Tim Roth.
Woody Allen's comedy of last year, The Curse of Jade Scorpion, in which Woody uses his neurotic charm to capture the heart of Helen Hunt, is also showing.
10 Minutes Older, a special project recruiting outstanding directors such as Spike Lee, Jim Jarmusch, Wim Wenders, Aki Kaurismaki and China's Chen Kaige (陳凱歌), will see participants create a 10-minute film focusing on the theme of "time."
It will be a good chance to see work from these well-known directors, some of whom haven't presented new films for quite a while. The project has been well-received at both this year's Cannes and Venice film festivals.
Among entrants in the Panorama section will be Matt Damon's Sundance participant, Gerry. Co-written by Damon and Casey Affleck (Ben's brother) and directed by Gus Van Sant, the film is an interesting combination of humorous dialogue and long scenery shots.
Matthew McConaughey and John Turturro recently starred in the well-received 13 Conversations About One Thing -- a film which contemplates what is means to be happy -- in which McConaughey plays an attorney-turned-fugitive.
Other Panorama entrants include Japanese talent Shunji Iwai's Berlin Film Festival award-winner, All About Lili Chou-Chou, which depicts lost Japanese high schoolers kids who seek salvation through worshiping pop-star Lily Chou-chou. Renowned Chinese director Zhang Yimou (
