Humor meets a sharp eye

In a lively exhibition at Dimension Art Center, artist Hong Yi offers his humorous observations of Taiwanese from all walks of life

By Vico Lee  /  STAFF REPORTER

Hong himself is doing so by discovering Taiwan's history and lifestyle.

Mr Benz is a humorous rendering of the older generation of farmers in Taiwan who suddenly became wealthy from land reform. With the windfall, they started other businesses in which their fortunes snowballed. "At one point, it occurred to them they should get a Mercedes Benz, because in Taiwan, it's a measure of wealth," Hong said.

This smirking Mr Benz in suit and unseemly shorts and rainboots has the entire island of Taiwan under his feet. Exposed amid his colorful attire are his mechanical innards, a mildly sarcastic take on the Taiwanese quest for money.
