2nd Floor will stretch its capacity to the limit tonight when it plays host to one of the world's top progressive trance DJs, John "00" Fleming.
A trip to most of Taipei's nightclubs will prove that trance is the selection of choice for most of the city's DJs, so Fleming may have to reach deep into his bag of tricks to surprise the local crowd.
He probably doesn't feel too intimidated, though, having spun at many of the world's biggest clubs for the better part of the last two decades, including Ministry of Sound and other major UK clubs like Gatecrasher and Godskitchen.
Getting a crowd onto the dance floor to move to trance music isn't that much of a challenge in Taipei anyway, not to someone like Fleming who's seen his fair share of adversity, including a winning battle against lung cancer at the age of 20.
Fleming has been at the forefront of trance music since the early 1990s with a sound that is hard-edged without being especially aggressive. It's a catchy sound that is funkier than most trance, while still keeping the epic song structure that makes trance so appealing to people whose time-space continuum has been altered. At least, that's the gist of Fleming's most popular track, called We Have No Reference of Time.
"We've done a lot of house and breakbeat parties, but this is our first time to bring in a major trance DJ from abroad," said Alan Hsia, manager of 2nd Floor. "The trance scene in town is mostly psychedelic trance, but John "00" [Fleming]'s music is something new."
2nd Floor has managed to rope in some of the biggest names in dance music, notably Takkiyu Ishino most recently, who played to a massively energized crowd. If Fleming can rouse the crowd in anywhere near the level that Ishino did, then it will be a night to remember.
The music starts tonight at 10pm, tickets cost NT$700 at the door. 2nd Floor is located at 15 Hoping W. Rd, Sec. 1, Taipei (台北市和平西路1段15號).
