The Peipu Pong Hong Tea Festival (北埔膨風節) has become an annual staple event of the Hakka cultural calendar in northern Taiwan and a major tourist draw to this scenic area. Originally the event focused on the harvesting of the top-quality tea produced in the region, and the agricultural roots of the event have not been completely forgotten, with an actual tea competition last Wednesday. The festival officially opens tomorrow at the Tzitien Temple (慈天宮), one of the area's better-known historical sites.

Starting at 9am with the announcement of the tea competition, the two-day event will continue with performances of Hakka singing, tours of the historic town and a flea market. To complement this event, the Lion's Head Mountain Scenic District (獅頭山國家風景區) will be hosting events through the week that will culminate in the Lion's Head Mountain Tea and Culture Festival (獅山茶香文化巡禮) next weekend. In addition to the tea and Hakka culture themes, this event will also incorporate the Little People Festival of the Saisiat, who have agreed to move the religious ceremony forward to coincide with the Lion's Mountain cultural activity.
