A slice of old Beijing comes to Taipei

By Gavin Phipps  /  STAFF REPORTER

The week-long Beijing opera extravaganza at Taipei's Chungshan Hall (中山堂) continues this weekend, when, as part of the on-going cross-strait cultural

exchange program, a special touring group comprising of some China's leading

classical opera stars will be taking to the stage to perform a selection of

the operatic art form's most celebrated harmonic melodramas.

The 20-person strong special touring group, which is comprised of members of

the Beijing National Opera Group (北京京劇團) and the Beijing City Opera

Troupe (北京市京劇團) and is under the guidance of renowned opera aficionado

Wang Yuxiou (王玉珍), is one the most well traveled of China's numerous

opera troupes.

Since its founding in the mid-1990s, the distinguished touring troupe has

enthralled audiences throughout Europe, the Americas and across Asia with

its undiluted and colorful performances of traditional Beijing opera. For

its Taipei appearances the Beijing based touring troupe will be joined by

some of Taiwan's leading opera stars for a series of 17 shows that

encompasses the many aspects of the traditional Chinese art form.

With the exception of Sunday's 2:30pm matinee, all performances begin at

7:30pm at Taipei's Chungshan Hall, which is located at 98 Yenping South Rd.,

(台北市延平南路98號).

Tickets for performances cost between NT$300 and NT$2,000 and are available

from ERA ticketing outlets nationwide or directly from the ticket office at

Taipei's Chungshan Hall.
