There is plenty of action to keep the kids enthralled, and the overall
sophistication and athleticism of the show will make it appeal to adults,
making Lili's Diary, a new show by the Canadian troupe Dynamo Theater, ideal
family entertainment. This performance - a view of the world seen from the
eyes of children - will be hosted by the National Theater in Taipei this
weekend. Theater Dynamo combines the arts of clowning, acrobatics, circus
and gymnastics in a physical expression of emotions that has proved very
effective at theater festivals around the world. In fact, it is surprising
how emotionally charged the story of the little nine-year-old girl is, given
the limitations on conventional dramatic techniques. Having said that, this
is the most text-oriented of Dynamo Theater's productions to date.
Dynamo Theater looks through the innocent eyes of children at a sometimes
cruel world, while at the same time avoiding syrupy sweetness of much
children's theater by its ability also to reveal the cruelty of innocence.
But primarily, the vitality of the movement is a celebration of life and its
infinite potential.
A brilliantly simple but effective set design makes chairs, doors and
playground swings not just props but characters within the drama played out
by Lili and her friends. Lili's Diary will be performed at the National
Theater tonight at 7:30pm and tomorrow at 2:30pm and 7:30pm. There will also
be a performance at the Hsinchu Arts Hall at 7:30pm on Tuesday. Tickets are
NT$400 to NT$1,500 and are available through ERA ticketing outlets.
