While singer Laura Fygi is still remembered in Europe for the garish and
racy garb she donned as part of 1980s all-girl disco act, Centerfold,
audiences in Taiwan are more familiar with the singer's less suggestive and
more jazz-orientated persona.
Since setting out on her solo career in the early 1990s with her debut
standard-jazz inspired album, Introducing Laura Fygi, the Dutch singer has
branched out and now boasts a global fan base.
The Netherlands' greatest musical export has successfully tackled not only
jazz, but also musical genres such as Latin, new-age and easy listening over
the years.
Dubbed Latin Queen by organizers in Taiwan, Fygi's upcoming series of
concerts actually coincides with the Asian release of the Dutch singers'
latest musical offering, Change - an album that sees Fygi in
jazzy/mainstream-crossover mode.
In keeping with the diversity of the material on the release, Fygi will be
treating local fans to a smorgasbord of material this coming weekend. Along
with belting out plenty of tunes from her latest album, Fygi will also be
performing Latin, jazz, easy listening and even a cover version or two of
pop tunes by other stars including Madonna.
Laura Fygi: The Latin Queen can be seen tonight at Taipei's Sun Yat-sen
Memorial Hall (台北國父紀念館). Tomorrow, at Taichung's Chungshan
Hall(台中市中山堂) and again on Sunday, at Kaohsiung's Chihteh
Hall(高雄市文化中心至德堂). All performances start at 7:30pm. Tickets cost
from NT$500 to NT$2,000 and are available from ERA ticket outlets
nationwide.
