An all-American in Chiayi

By Raymond Kuo  /  STAFF REPORTER

Mention Chiayi, and the last thing you probably think of is good Western

food. To resolve that pressing dilemma, American Pie Bar and Grill offers a

wide selection of burgers, salads, and other food that will remind any

American of just what they left behind.

"It's hard to get good food down here, and since my wife always wanted to

open a restaurant, we thought it would be great to bring a taste of home to

Chiayi," said Terry, the restaurant's owner, who arrived in Taiwan from

Tennessee 10 years ago.

The cheeseburgers and lemonade come highly recommended, as well as the

corndogs. The restaurant has a mellow 1950s atmosphere, making it a relaxing

place to enjoy a drink or have a meal.

The owners and servers are very friendly, more than willing to sit down and

chat with newcomers and veterans alike (and if you are lucky, let you try a

new dish they are thinking of adding to the menu).

In addition, on some evenings, Terry turns down the lights and plays movies

or TV shows like The Simpsons or Scooby-Doo as part of their theme nights.

And, by far its best attraction, the restaurant has about the only

high-quality foozball table in Taiwan.

The restaurant was established just over a month ago, so the owners are

constantly tinkering with the menu and attempting to add new attractions.

Live entertainment during the evenings and a brunch menu are slated for the

near future.

American Pie is located on 123 Shing Yi W. Road, Chiayi, and is open from

11am to midnight, Tuesday through Thursday. Friday through Sunday, the doors

close at 2am.
