The Taipei Traditional Arts Festival hits southern mode this weekend, when
the stage of the recently refurbished Fuhsing Auditorium of Taipei's
Chungshan Hall (中山堂光復廳) plays host to some of the nation's leading
exponents of Nanguan Opera.
At 7:30pm tonight the Nanguan Yuefu (閩南樂府) presents Music of the Old
Rituals - An evening of Nanguan Music (南樂之夜-樂以致禮). Featuring a
selection of several of the operatic art forms most important and historical
compositions, the show includes exerts from Grasping the Peach Blossom
(梅花操) and Travels to Five Lakes (五湖遊), two operatic works dating back
to the southern styles' early days.
Tomorrow night a makeshift group comprising of some of Taiwan's leading
aficionados of Nanguan take to the stage to bring audiences The Ancient Ways
of Nanguan (古早人的挨•吹•唱).
The show, which combines both traditional Nanguan tunes with a selection of
more contemporary operatic pieces, offers fans of Nanguan the rare
opportunity to hear a smorgasbord of operatic numbers spanning over 1,000
years of Nanguan's melodic history.
Tickets for both performances cost NT$200 and are available at the door of
Taipei's Chungshan Hall. The venue is located at 98 Yenping South Rd.,
