Left wing Aboriginal combo hits the right notes

The Flying Fish and Cloud Panther Music Collective, founded in response to the 921 earthquake, has snubbed conventional distribution channels for their work. Selling their CDs by the roadside, they are now beginning to achieve a degree of recognition for both their sound and their message

Working in this manner does have its drawbacks, however. The most prominent of these dress in an authoritarian shade of blue and carry 9mm automatics.

Not that the FFCPMC allows status or firepower to hamper its work. To date the authorities have confiscated over 300 of the FFCPMC's CDs and issued scores of tickets. Many of these now hang alongside the poster of Che Guevara in the band's headquarters. All the fines remain unpaid.

"We're not selling the CDs for our own gain. All the profits are used to help Taiwan's forgotten peoples," continued Mizin. "The cops have even come here and asked us to pay up on more than one occasion. But we have no intention of ever paying them and have told them that in no uncertain terms. After all, why give money to an already fat and bigoted system in order to raise money for voiceless minorities?"

According to Mizin over 40,000 CDs released on the band's Heart of Darkness label have been sold in this manner to date. This number includes sales of the combos first studio album, Songs of Life (生命之歌), along with a series of solo works by individual band members and a collection of works containing music specific to certain tribes.

Riding on the back of the success of Native Melody in Three Parts, the FFCPMC released a VCD, In the Footsteps of the Flying Fish and Cloud Panther (飛魚雲豹的蹤跡). Like the band's debut album the VCD features highlights of some of the band's memorable live performances.

More than just concerts, performances by the band are also informative. Along with the pleasant music, these shows act as platforms where representatives from the various tribes keep the public informed of recent political and social happenings related to Aboriginal rights in Taiwan.
