Internationally renowned cellist Yo-yo Ma (馬友友) brings his talent to Taipei next week for a one-time performance, a stop along his Silk Road Project tour.

The Silk Road Project, founded by Ma in 1998, seeks to celebrate music from the various cultures along the historic land and sea routes that comprise the Silk Road. The ancient trade route extended from the easternmost part of Asia to Europe. His concert repertoire will include commissioned pieces composed for specially created Silk Road ensembles and aims to bring the cultural influences and musical viewpoints he has come across in his world travels to light.

"Throughout my travels, I have thought about the culture, religion and ideas that have been influential for centuries along the Silk Road, and have wondered how new musical voices were formed from the diversity of these traditions," said Ma, who continually strives to find new ways to communicate his passion to audiences.

So far this year, the international tour has taken the Chinese-American Ma to the Netherlands and Germany. Asian stops include Taipei, Beijing, and Shanghai. He takes the stage of the National Concert Hall on Tuesday evening. To learn more about the Silk Road project, which acts as an umbrella organization for various cultural and musical programs, visit its Web site at www.silkroadproject.org.
