Movie: Hearts in Atlantis

STAFF WRITER

Rated G, directed by Scott Hicks, with Anthony Hopkins (Ted Brautigan), Hope Davis (Elizabeth Garfield), Anton Yelchin (Bobby Garfield), running time: 101 minutes.

Hearts in Atlantis combines the two stories in Stephen King's collection, Low Men in Yellow Coats and Heavenly Shades of Night are Falling into one film. Following the death of a friend, Robert Garfield reflects on his childhood and the many Norman Rockwell moments he shared with his friends. He also remembers the mysterious man named Ted who boarded for a while with he and his mother and the close friendship they developed. Ted hires the young Bobby to read the daily paper aloud for him and be on the lookout for ``lowmen'' on the street. Does Ted have something the men want, the boy asks. Yes, the man says, ``lets leave it at that.'' The film's greatest asset is screenwriter William Goldman (Marathon Man, Princess Bride), who earlier adapted King's Misery to the screen, but, with Scott Hicks' careful direction, crafts a less miserable and infinitely more watchable story here.
