People on a tight budget or tired of paying NT$150 for a mediocre beer will
hail the opening of Peso, a new bar on Hoping East Road.
In almost every way Peso is a clone of 45. It's in the same general
neighborhood, draws the same crowd, has a dark brick interior and pumps
Top-40 music at high decibels, occasionally attracting the boys in blue.
Where Peso differs with 45 and most drinking holes that don't call for
sitting on hard stools under a highway overpass is in its rock-bottom
prices. Beers range in price from NT$140 to NT$180 but are two for one
between 8pm and midnight. Beyond midnight, buy three beers and get one free.
There are also regular specials after midnight with beers at NT$100.
The designers built the seating areas in tiers to create isolated islands
suited to parties of different sizes. It's an interesting concept, except at
some tables you find yourself staring at the shins of the people at the next
tier and possibly downstream of spilled beer. On the downside, the bar
offers little in the way of food. There are nachos (read: Doritos), popcorn,
beef and pork jerky, among others. Beware though, the jerky looks and tastes
as though taken from packages purchased at the 7-11 across the street. But
when beers are two for one, who's complaining?
Peso is located at 187-2 Hoping E. Rd., Sec. 2, Taipei
(台北市和平東路二段187之2號).
