Milk turns juicy

By Max Woodworth  /  STAFF REPORTER

It used to be possible to impress friends by taking them to Milk, the bar

with the digital key pad on the door that helped you fool people into

thinking you were privy to the secret password of the stars?hangout. In

fact, the door was always open, but you didn't have to tell anyone that.

Well, Milk is no longer and the entire place has been thoroughly enovated,

including the facade, which now lacks the key pad. Don't worry though, the

place retains its space-age flair to provide a certain cachet for those in

need.

The owners have stuck to a non-alcoholic beverage theme in selecting a name

for their bar, this time choosing Juicy. But unlike Milk, which had numerous

dairy and otherwise cow-related products in display refrigerators, the only

visible juices at Juicy are behind the bar and mostly in syrupy concentrate

form for mixing the bar's specialty frozen drinks.

Juicy's frozen drinks may not seem terribly appealing in this

colder-than-usual winter, but they simply must be tried. Made with either

vodka or rum mixed with your choice of fruit flavor - lychee, strawberry,

peach, green plum, watermelon, melon or passion fruit - and then blended

with ice, the drinks are like smoothies without the California "wellness."

They are served in a carafe for NT$600 and pack a considerable punch

concealed by the sweet syrups.

The second-best part about Juicy after the frozen drinks is the back room,

which consists of a walled-off, elevated wood platform furnished with

oversized pillows, pink lighting and full-length mirrors.

Since rock-star/DJ Chang Chen-yue (張振嶽) owns the place, he will likely

make occasional impromptu appearances to play around on the turntables. That

would be a lot of value for your NT dollar, because he usually DJs at

absurdly expensive clubs.

Juicy is located at 107-2 Hsinyi E. Rd., Sec. 4, Taipei (北市信義東路4段107

號之2).
