Bananas for alternative theater

Just last month, The Thirteenth Month Theater(十三月戲劇場)was selected by

the Council for Cultural Affairs as part of the "Discovering Alternative Theater in Taiwan" program for its imaginative presentation of social

issues. Meg(妹個), their performance in that program, blended illustration

and video art into its discussion of child abuse.

Now the prolific group is back with "Deep-fried Banana Showcase," (拔絲香蕉

劇展)a program combining three plays by different directors and playwrights.

"Most theater groups have only one playwright and director. However, we

regularly organize showcase programs featuring different directors and

playwrights so that there's more diversity in our shows," said Yeh Man-ling

(葉曼玲), one of the director-playwrights in the showcase.

Although dealing with different themes, the three female

director-playwrights of the featured shows give the showcase a more feminine

point of view.

Love in Hell (人間戀/煉慾/獄) alternates between two love stories, one

comic, the other gloomy, to express lovers?efforts to give their

relationships a veneer of perfection. The couple in one story does so by

acting out the cheesy scenes in romance movies, but something always goes

awry, ruining the fake happiness.

The... (那) shows how a love-starved little girl gets to understand and

accept love through an encounter with a mysterious cat. Greenhouse (溫室)

deals with the life of Taiwan's Y-generation, who grew up in an affluent

environment. Too much material comfort deprived them of their sensitivity

and left them short-sighted.

"The Deep-fried Banana Showcase" will go on stage at the Whashang Art

District's Fruit Wine Hall, 1 Pateh Rd., Sec. 1, Taipei (北市八德路1段1號)

tonight at 7:30 with Love in Hell and The.... The two plays will go on stage

tomorrow at 2:30pm and Sunday at 7:30pm. Greenhouse will performed tomorrow

at 7:30pm and Sunday at 2:30pm. Tickets are available through Acer ticketing

outlets or by calling the group at 0918-250-016.
