Of all the international performers that have come to Taiwan, Yasmine
Hugonnet and Maxime Lannarelli have probably interacted the most with the
local art scene. As the duo's name suggests, Synalephe Interactive Dance
Theater intends to create lively interactions around the world through
workshops, collaborative projects with local artists, as well as their "body contact dance" performances.
Earlier this year in Taipei, they put up Songes — A Trip to the City's
Heart, an improvisational performance in the form of "intrusion," which
places dancers in public spaces to reach out to the passers-by and involve
them in the performance through body contact, thus prompting them to explore
their own thoughts and feelings. Another highly interactive performance was
last week's Beyond at Whashan Art District, in which Hugonnet and Iannarelli
collaborated with eight blind dancers in their contact-improvisation dance
which required a strong sense of trust between performers.
DUET OcReTerrE, or purple earth, explores the possibility for humans to
regain a natural balance and whether "the human body can adapt to nature
again after it has been colonized by machinery and technology for centuries," said Yasmine Hugonnet in an interview with the Taipei Times.
The dance integrates a video installation showing natural objects
transforming into something else, challenging the audience's idea of what's
real and what's not.
DUET OcReTerrE will go on stage tonight at 7:30 and tomorrow at 2:30pm at
the Experimental Theater of the Performing Arts Center, Taipei National
University of the Arts, 1 Hsueh Yuan Rd., Peitou (北投學園路一號). Tickets
are available at Acer ticketing outlets.
