"Our long-term goal is to set up the international competition section and possibly a film market session [to lure distributors]," said Wang.
In order for a film festival to be a true showcase of talent, it needs to have incentive to draw acclaimed filmmakers as well as film distributors to create more market value. Wang said, however, that the Golden Horse still has a long way to go.
Take the Pusan film festival in Korea as a example, Wang said. It has an international competition as well as a large section for Asian films. "It's succeeding because it has strong sponsorship from [the Korean] government," he said. "As for us, we can't even afford the plane ticket to some international festivals," he added.
