"Come on! Victoria" is the title of the eigth Stock Rock (倉庫搖滾), Taichung's biggest alternative rock-music event, which has been held in different venues for the past three years. For Chen Hsin-hua (陳信華), the founder and organizer of this year's concert, the name "Victoria" characterizes the British bent of the event to be held Sunday.
"Stock Rock started at Stock 20 (20號倉庫), Taichung's major art space, as a performance opportunity for bands based in Taichung. The event's original intention to include all styles of music had been ignored in the past twp years; it was overwhelmed with hardcore rock bands," said Chen. "This time we were careful to invite female-fronted bands and those that display a spectrum of musical styles, particularly eletronica and punk - styles that originated in England."
No longer taking place at Stock 20, the concert now aims to recruit new bands from around Taiwan to create at atmosphere different from the over-hyped Spring Scream.
This time around, the organizers have gathered seven bands, including Pepper Cat (胡椒貓) and Socks (襪子), which have firmly established fan bases. Among the new faces are Vic, a female-fronted band playing psychedelic rock distinguished by soothing vocals, and Bad Daughter (壞女兒) with its light folk rock with angry lyrics depicting the dark side of teenage life.
Stock Rock will take place on Sunday from 1pm to 7pm in Taichung at Allah (阿拉), 1, Ln. 4, Chunhsing St. (台中市中興街4巷1號). Tickets are available at Tung Mei Records (東美唱片行) for NT$150 in advance or NT$200 at the door.
