The 6th Taipei Hakka Festival (台北市第六屆客家文化節系列活動) is set to bring a feast of color and sounds to the Tienmu sports arena (台北市天母運動公園) this weekend in a celebration of Hakka culture unlike any other before in Taiwan.
Without neglecting the traditional Hakka music and events such as puppet shows, which will be featured in the festival, organizers have branched out somewhat this year. Instead of focusing on the Hakka community's cultural heritage, the main event will be the nation's leading Hakka musicians, who will present their most contemporary sounds.
Along with a set by the popular Hakka band Labor Exchange (交工樂隊), winner of
the 2000 Golden Melody Awards' Best Produced Album Award, there will be a performance of what has been dubbed 'Hakka E-music" or "hip hak."
Local record producer, Liu Shao-xi (劉卲希), whose credits include albums by Mavis Fan (范曉萱) and Tsai Chin (蔡琴), will be spinning and re-mixing records when he hits the stage with his own brand of hip-hak.
The 6th Taipei Hakka Festival (台北市第六屆客家文化節系列活動) kicks off at 7pm tonight with an opening ceremony at the Tienmou sports arena. Saturday's activities begin at 10am with an exhibition of works by Hakka entrepreneurs. Sunday's festivities begin at 10am with an exhibition of Hakka religious rituals. The Tienmu sports arena is located at Chungcheng Rd., Sec. 2, Taipei (臺北市忠誠路2段) Admission to all events is free.
