This Disneyland for the dance crowd is one of the few clubs in central Taipei that plays techno and gets away with it.
Full of the usual suspects - trendy girls in tiny black dresses, boys in baggy jeans and men with betel nut-stain teeth - Sonic Lemon has been open about six months and has acquired quite a reputation for itself.
Located at B1-1, 270, Sec. 4, Chunghsiao E. Rd., (忠孝東路四段270號地下一樓之1), Sonic Lemon is unmistakable at night from the motley crew of clubbers, curious onlookers and police crowded at the steps that lead down to the club.
The music can perhaps be described as Mickey Mouse meets acid house. Expect plenty of hard-edged beats, synthesized chords and driving techno and then maybe a seamlessly mixed I'm a Barbie girl in a Barbie world by Aqua, or even a mandopop lullaby by the flava-of the-week popstar.
Two pluses at Sonic Lemon are the clean bathrooms, even in the late hours, and the bar, which is typically not crowded and where it is possible to have a drink and a conversation without people's voices being drowned out by the club's heavy bass.
Expect to pay NT$200, for beet, soft drinks or water. Entrance fees are NY$700 on the weekend, NT$500 during the week. Opening hours are from 10pm to 8am on the weekend, though the place closes earlier during the week.
