Look at the music

By Vico Lee  /  STAFF REPORTER

"Music theater" was first introduced to Taiwan when the Ju Percussion Group (朱宗慶打擊樂團) put on Four Seasons of Taiwan (台灣四季) in 1992. Subsequent performances continued to make use of lighting and dance to establish the cross-genre style as part of the group's repertoire.

The purpose of musical theater is to visualize music by fusing theatrical elements such as body movements, sound effects and lighting into a musical performance.

See the Music (看得見的音樂) is the group's attempt to draw people's attention back to the music, doing away with many of the multimedia elements that characterized previous shows. But the visual element has not been completely removed, and music ranging from classical concertos to pop tunes will be "displayed".

In Praise of Drums turns musical instruments into stage props. Drummers and their drumsticks are covered in fluorescent colors on a pitch-black stage. Their movements show how dynamic their music is.

Ju Percussion Group will perform tonight and tomorrow at 7:30pm and tomorrow and Sunday at 2:30pm at the National Theater. Tickets can be reserved through the Acer ticketing system or by calling the Ju Percussion Group at (02)2890-8616. More information can be obtained from the group's Web site at http://www.jugroup.org.tw.
