Clippers play the underworld

By Gavin Phipps  /  STAFF REPORTER

For a band that has been at the forefront of the local alternative music scene for nearly seven years, Clippers Electric Band (夾子電動大樂隊) waited a long time before entering a recording studio.

The long delay was worth it, however. When the band released its debut album, The Spiritual Service Team - Turn on the Disco Ball (TCM), in January this year, it proved one of the most exciting debut albums to appear for some time.

Unlike many of the band's peers, Clippers' performances sees the band experimenting with a multitude of musical genres rather than simply using buzzsaw guitar-laden mayhem to get its message across.

One minute the band is knocking out a retro-tune in the traditional nakashi manner and the next it is joined on stage by Lili and Lala, two highly energetic young dancers, as band members blow audiences away with fiery funk loaded tunes.

Very few, If any, local bands come close to being as individual and possessing such a unique sound as Clippers. Adding to this already explosive musical fusion, the band's mouthpiece, Hsiao Ying is also prone to bouts of stand up comedy that are quite as sarcastic as the band's lyrics.

If you're after some interesting social commentary this weekend, then tonight's Clippers gig is probably the place to begin.

The Clippers Electric Big Band will be performing at Underworld at 10pm tonight. Tickets cost NT$250 and are available at the door. The Underworld is located at B1, 45, Shita Road, Taipei (地下社會:北市師大路45號B1). Call (02) 2369-0103 for further details.
