Free beer and snacks

By Gavin Phipps  /  STAFF REPORTER

If you have a craving for southern Taiwanese cuisine and enjoy a beverage or two – or possibly three of four – then over the next three days the Chienkuo Beer Factory (建國啤酒廠), located at the junction of Pateh Road (八德路) and Chienkuo North Road (建國北路), is the place to be.

Organized jointly by the Taiwan Tobacco and Alcohol Monopoly and the Tainan City Government Bureau of Transportation, the Tainan Cuisine and Taiwan Draught Beer Festival begins this morning bright and early at 10:30am.

There will be over 35 stalls offering nearly as many variations of cheap snacks native to the Tainan area, such as coffin bread, shrimp rolls, glutinous rice dumplings, duck, squid, eel rice noodles and an assortment of sweet desserts.

If it’s a liquid diet you crave, you won’t have to walk very far, as you’ll find more Taiwan draught beer than you could ever wish for on tap at special bars set up at the Festival site. And what’s more, the beer will be free.
