Schuur brings love to Taipei

A jazz singer with a message, Diane Schuur wants Taipei to feel the good vibes

By Jules Quartly  /  CONTRIBUTING REPORTER

Music, she says, is an amplification of feelings and emotions. "It's something you can't touch and can't see, but its there."

She talks a little about her life and meeting her husband, Les Rocket, a former aerospace engineer (appropriately enough). She says that she tours not just for the love of music, "but also to feed the cats and the rocket at home."

With her husband she speaks of therapy and of removing obstacles to happiness. They talk about forgiving and forgetting, what we are born with -- ? "the cards we are dealt," says Rocket -- ? and establishing our identities separate from our parents.

They call this a recovery process and Schuur sees what she does as a part of this, something that she can give to other people. Work she can usefully do. She uses a metaphor borrowed from the medical profession. "Music is a healing thing. Why? Because it is about emotions."

Being blind and being an artist, she has said, means that she is on a mission. When she sings, it is from the bottom of her heart.
