Green Curry opened a little over a month ago, after a previous restaurant the family ran in Hsimenting burned down. It has already got a loyal following and is well worth a visit.
Ya Rou Bian Goose Restaurant
(鴨肉扁)
98-2, Chunghua Rd., Sec. 1 (中華路一段98之2號), tel: 2371-3918
Open late-morning to late at night. Average meal: NT$100. No English menu, no credit cards accepted.
Famous among the Hsimenting crowds, this two-floored restaurant has been popular for 50 years and it shows. There has been very little compromise with changing fashions or new ideas about decor and service.
The boss, whose father and mother came up with a recipe for success, does not need to follow trends. What he has is fresh goose, rice noodles and broth. The menu is simple, the service is not exceptional, but it is effective, the prices are cheap and the customers keep coming.
You are seated quickly and without fuss, confirmation of what you are to receive is given and a few minutes later, bowls of steaming soup and plates of goose meat with a sweet barbecue sauce and hot sauce are served.
The rice noodles come with spring onions, a few herbs, bamboo shoots and fried onions and a bit of meat. Servings of goose meat vary in size. A portion for one person will set you back NT$100 with soup.
There is not a great view, unless you want to watch the cooks dipping into the vats of broth and cleaving the goose. It could also be said that the restaurant has seen better days as far as decor goes, but when business is this good, why change?
