Don't believe the hype

Never mind the rumors in Internet chat rooms, organizers Jimmy & Wade confirmed that Spring Scream will take place from April 5 to April 8

Jimmy Moe and Wade Davis -- or Jimmy & Wade, as most people know them -- have never advertised or promoted Spring Scream. Although the concert now stands as Taiwan's biggest live music festival, they still try to run it like their first impromptu concert on the beach in Kenting in 1995. Of course it's bigger now, and they have insurance.

But the event maintains its DIY feel, as evident in the Spring Scream 7 Web site at http://www.springscream.com. The two started a couple weeks ago fooling around with flash animation and produced a 30-second cartoon, then a minute-long segment. Neither of the sites contained any information other than the dates of the event, April 5 to April 8.

At the same time though, a group of Kenting locals began publicizing a second concert, to be held from April 1 to April 3. The competing event, called Woodstock, has obtained sponsorship from the Pingtung County Government and was originally promoted as a replacement Spring Scream. Rumors also began to circulate on electronic bulletin board systems that Jimmy & Wade had backed out of the festival.

Yesterday, however, Jimmy & Wade, were busy preparing for Spring Scream, and confirmed that the show will take place at the Liufu Ranch (六富山莊), a wooded swath of land just inside the gates of Kenting National Park that has been the festival's venue for the past two years.

Moving beyond music, Jimmy & Wade are adding a film festival and art exhibition areas to the festival. Bands are also encouraged to come up with stage visuals, as backdrop projection will be available.

Check the Web site for information on registration for bands, vendors, artists and filmmakers, ticket outlets, and camping and hotel information.
