Gao for those who didn't get it

By Yu Sen-lun  /  STAFF REPORTER

People curious to learn more about Nobel laureate Gao Xingjian's (高行健) plays have an opportunity to hear a reading of one of his plays tonight. The performance is being put on by Comedian's Workshop's (相聲瓦舍).

The troupe, which specializes in traditional Chinese standup comedy, will perform a reading of Gao's The Night Walker (夜遊神), a play about one man's dreamland, which is rich with existentialist connotations.

The performers, including Gao Xingjian's friend and Taiwanese writer Chang Ta-chun (張大春), will read from the script, with the addition of only simple movements and props.

"Gao's work emphasizes the voice and the flow of language. We thought a reading of the play, which is a more objective type of performance, would be closer to Gao's original ideas about the play," said Feng Yi-kang (馮翊綱), actor and director of the troupe. "If you cannot understand Gao's works on the page, maybe it's easier to grasp them when they are read out loud," he said.

Gao Xingjian will attend the reading.
