People curious to learn more about Nobel laureate Gao Xingjian's (高行健) plays have an opportunity to hear a reading of one of his plays tonight. The performance is being put on by Comedian's Workshop's (相聲瓦舍).
The troupe, which specializes in traditional Chinese standup comedy, will perform a reading of Gao's The Night Walker (夜遊神), a play about one man's dreamland, which is rich with existentialist connotations.
The performers, including Gao Xingjian's friend and Taiwanese writer Chang Ta-chun (
"Gao's work emphasizes the voice and the flow of language. We thought a reading of the play, which is a more objective type of performance, would be closer to Gao's original ideas about the play," said Feng Yi-kang (
Gao Xingjian will attend the reading.
