Sydney Stucki at @live
At a party which most of the Biennial artists will attend, Sidney Stucki, aka DJ Sid, will spin what one profile calls "disco cut-ups, dirty deep house and spooky minimalist techno" at @live tomorrow night. The Geneva based DJ/artist is truly one who rides on both sides of the art fence, as his occupation includes everything from large scale paintings to nightclub DJing to t-shirt and graphic design. TB2000 co-curator Jerome Sans commented that performers and film directors like Cheang, Hanayo and DJ Sid are important participants in the exhibition as they are able to push the limits of art well beyond the confines of the gallery.
For Sans, music, film and conversations in smoke-filed clubs are simply extensions of the threads that run through the artworks in the show. "It's part of our everyday life. It's part of our culture. You know, we are hanging out every night in bars and clubs. It's all related," he said.
Stucki's in-museum contribution to TB2000 is a giant mural spanning the front cornice over the building's main entrance. The painting, consisting of black and white horizontal bars, doesn't represent anything in particular, but uses motifs that could be said to resemble a soundboard readout, a screwed up bar code, or bad tracking on your VCR. The theme is obviously relates to digital technology, something which Stucki seems to use in all of his endeavors.
